Known locally as “the union paper,” The Citizens’ Voice was launched by union members in 1978 when an out-of-town media conglomerate, Capital Cities Communications, purchased The Times Leader from its former, local owners. Negotiations with staff soon stalled, and a wide swath of the Times Leader‘s union members went on strike and then eventually left. Almost immediately following their departure, those very same labor strikers launched The Citizens’ Voice. Proud coal-mining teamsters embraced the paper, as did their families and neighboring unions in subsequent years. ICYMI: CNN v. BuzzFeed: A media spat for the digital age Naturally, The Times Leader has its own contingent of staunchly loyal followers. As a result, each respective paper has for years now claimed to be significantly more popular and more successful than the other—by appealing to higher circulation numbers, say, or a bigger readership. The most recent round of what might be called the Wilkes-Barre Newspaper Battle kicked off this summer. On June 27 , The Citizens’ Voice ran a story touting its circulation dominance over The Times Leader: The Citizens’ Voice increased its daily and Sunday lead over The Times Leader, the most recent circulation numbers released by the national Alliance for Audited Media show. The audited report…shows The Citizens’ Voice holds a 2,615 lead in Sunday circulation in one of the nation’s last remaining competitive print newspaper markets…The Citizens’ Voice, founded in 1978 after a protracted labor dispute, holds a 4,327 newspaper edge in daily circulation as well.

Newspapers get a break on Trump tariffs

02 newspaper tariffs RESTRICTED The Tampa Bay Times said it cut about 50 jobs earlier this year , a decision that the paper’s publisher attributed to an additional $3 million in expenses imposed by the tariffs. And last week, the LaGrange Daily News in Georgia said it will start printing five editions a week instead of six due in part to the “rapid increases in newsprint costs.” Groups representing the newspaper industry like the News Media Alliance, which represents about 2,000 newspapers in North America, lobbied against the tariffs. “We applaud the International Trade Commission for today reaching a final, unanimous negative determination that Canadian imports of uncoated groundwood paper, which includes newsprint used by newspapers, do not cause material harm to the U.S. paper industry,” David Chavern, the president and CEO of the News Media Alliance, said in a statement on Wednesday. Although the Department of Commerce revised the tariffs to lower levels, Chavern said they still “would have been unsustainable for newspapers, other printers and publishers and printers.” Related: Local newspapers fear tariffs could cripple them The ITC’s vote on Wednesday will help address some of these concerns. “The United States International Trade Commission today determined that a U.S. industry is not materially injured or threatened with material injury by reason of imports of uncoated groundwood paper from Canada that the U.S. Department of Commerce has determined are subsidized and sold in the United States at less than fair value.” the commission said in a statement released after the vote. The paper tariffs were advocated by Northern Pacific Paper, or Norpac, a small company in Washington that employs about 300 workers.

REUTERS/Kim Hong-Ji/File Photo The joint liaison office, seen as the start of a de facto embassy, is another step toward closer cooperation between the two Koreas. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in will hold their third meeting this year in Pyongyang next week, when it is hoped they can help resolve a diplomatic impasse between the United States and North Korea. The South Korean government had hoped to open the office by August but it was delayed when denuclearization talks between the United States and North Korea stalled after an historic summit between Kim and U.S. President Donald Trump in Singapore in June. However, Kim sent a message to South Korean envoys last week that he wants to achieve denuclearization during Trump’s first term. That followed what Trump described as a “very warm” letter from Kim requesting another meeting, which rekindled hopes for progress. The two Koreas previously communicated by fax and special phone lines, which were at times cut off when inter-Korean relations sank, but will now be able to “communicate 24 hours, 365 days”, South Korea’s Unification Ministry spokesman Baik Tae-hyun said this week. Vice minister-level officials from North and South respectively will head the new office and will also serve as permanent negotiation representatives at weekly meetings, Baik said. “We will manage inter-Korean relations stably and hope that this will also help the progress of denuclearization talks between North Korea and the United States,” he said.

Apple is talking to big newspapers about joining its subscription service

Now it wants the New York Times, the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal to join up. Eddy Cue, who runs Apple’s media unit, has been in discussions with newspaper publishers Earlier this year, Apple got into the magazine business by buying a digital magazine distributor. Now it wants to add daily news to the mix. Apple has been talking to some of the biggest newspapers in the U.S. about adding their stories to Texture, the magazine app Apple bought in March. Apple executives, led by content boss Eddy Cue, have reached out to the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post about joining the app, according to people familiar with the conversations, which began this summer. The discussions are happening as Apple ramps up its interest in content sales and subscription. It is putting at least $1 billion into a slate of TV shows it expects to start showing next year, and many people believe Apple would like to market a supersized subscription offering that bundles music, video and news together. Texture — often described as a Netflix or Hulu for magazines — currently lets consumers read as many stories as they want from dozens of magazines for a $10 monthly subscription.

20pc oil royalty not possible yet | Daily Express Newspaper Online, Sabah, Malaysia.

“The proposal cannot be carried out (now) as it contravenes the Petroleum Development Act (PDA). “For this to be done (20 per cent royalty), it will take time as amendments need to be carried out on the PDA,” he said during the question-and-answer session at the Dewan Rakyat, NST reports. He was answering a question from Datuk Seri Panglima Madius Tangau (Upko-Tuaran), who asked when the Federal Government could implement the 20 per cent royalty promised to oil-producing states. Azmin said the Act fixed the oil royalty at 10 per cent of net profit to the Federal Government and oil-producing states. He said Pakatan Harapan’s Blue Book merely promised a fair distribution of oil royalty to these states. “At this time, Petronas needs to pay 10 per cent cash payment of gross production in oil and gas to the (Federal government). From this amount, 5 per cent is taken by the Federal Government and State Government respectively. “Petronas makes this payment twice a year, in February and August. The 10 per cent cash payment is the gross value per barrel at market value. “Payment is made regardless of whether oil production at the (drilling) site is profitable or not. “From this value per barrel, 70 per cent from the gross production of oil and gas is actually the cost of recovery that is borne by Petronas,” he said, adding that the oil company is further saddled by other necessary payments like the Petroleum Income Tax Act.

Dedrick Devonshay Williams has been arrested on charges including first-degree murder in the death of XXXTentacion.CreditBroward Sheriff’s Office He is scheduled to appear before a criminal court judge Monday. XXXTentacion, a gifted but controversial rapper who was highly influential on a generation of young rappers who have taken root chiefly on the online platform SoundCloud, was killed on Monday outside a motor sports store in Deerfield Beach, Fla. In a previous statement, the sheriff said that XXXTentacion had been approached by two armed suspects as the rapper left the dealership. Documents released by the sheriff’s office, including the arrest warrant for Mr. Williams, gave few details about the investigation. The office said in a statement that it was “seeking additional suspects,” but representatives did not respond to further questions. Documents showing the evidence that led to the murder charge have been sealed. XXXTentacion had been awaiting trial on charges including aggravated battery of a pregnant victim, false imprisonment and witness tampering. Those charges led to his music being banned from Spotify’s playlists last month in conjunction with a short-lived policy about “hateful conduct,” with R. Kelly apparently the only other affected artist.

One of the Helsinki trams which is being given away Finland’s capital gives away its old trams By News from Elsewhere… …as found by BBC Monitoring These are external links and will open in a new window Image caption Car 11, built in 1959, is one of the trams being given away The Finnish city of Helsinki is giving away some of its old trams, but the offer comes with a few strings attached. A notice published by the city’s transport authority says that they have a number of antique trams that aren’t quite fit for museums, but would rather not send to the scrap yard. Instead, they are offering them for free to collectors, on the condition that they are conserved and not turned into summer cottages or storage facilities , national broadcaster Yle reports. Yle also says that prospective owners of the trams must not take the retired vehicles out of the country. Interested parties need to get their bids in by the end of August , and must outline to Helsinki City Transport what – exactly – they plan to do with the old streetcars. They must also be prepared to submit annual reports on the wagons’ use. Of the trams on offer, one is older than the nation of Finland itself , which celebrated its centenary last December. Another is a spritely 60 years old, 14.2m long (46.5 feet) and can carry 111 passengers . While a free tram might sound appealing, Yle notes that a hidden cost may put potential buyers off.

RELATED: People reportedly interviewed in Robert Mueller’s Russia probe In a footnote, the special counsel singled out two stories in The New York Times and Washington Post last year, which claimed that Mueller’s office had conducted “no-knock” raids of Manafort’s house. The Times cited two anonymous sources “close to the investigation” to report that FBI agents had picked the lock on Manafort’s door rather than announcing their presence prior to raiding his house. Many other news outlets, including the BBC , Vox , and Business Insider , then cited the Times report on the “no-knock” warrant at the time. Mueller’s office later denied carrying out “no-knock” raids , though had until now stopped short of attacking specific outlets over claims to the contrary. “The reporting, at times inaccurately, comments on the nature of the evidence collected in the case or activities of the parties.” “Furthermore, the amount of publicity about this case is only likely to grow as the trial date approaches, and such publicity increases the possibility that jurors will form biases or pre-formed opinions that may prejudice one or both parties.” It also called out reports that “question the legitimacy of the Special Counsel’s investigation, tending to advance the opinion that the investigation is ‘tainted’ and therefore its results are suspect,” and stories that “include disparaging descriptions of the defendant.” The filing cited a February 2018  Boston Herald story and a June 2018  LA Times op-ed to demonstrate those examples. The court filing included a proposed, 19-page questionnaire to potential jurors to understand the possibility of their having prejudices before trial. Jurors typically receive a jury questionnaire when they arrive for service, which ask them for basic information, prior experience, and pre-trial knowledge of the case. Ties between researchers and alcohol producers prompt NIH to shut down study of moderate drinking In other emails, a trade group representing European spirits makers told NIAAA staffers of its interest in a potential agency-sponsored conference that would highlight the health benefits of alcohol. And in an email among NIAAA employees, one person describes his or her intent to conceal from NIH leaders an editorial in the medical journal BMJ that argued “that reduction of alcohol consumption, even for light to moderate drinkers, is beneficial for cardiovascular health.” That internal email was addressed to “team health benefits of drinking.” Given all these concerns surrounding the online clothes shopping websites study, its ultimate conclusions were unlikely to “be actionable or believable,” the advisory committee wrote. A separate investigation from the NIH’s Office of Management Assessment found that “a small number of NIAAA employees” did not follow agency policies regarding in their attempts to secure outside funding and to select a principal investigator for the study. The NIH said it would take “appropriate personnel actions” but added that it could not discuss details about specific employees. The agency also pledged to share both reports with the inspector general for the Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees the NIH. Outside funding for NIH-sponsored studies is solicited by the Foundation of the National Institutes of Health , an independent nonprofit organization established by Congress in 1990. The FNIH has “firewalls” to make sure companies don’t influence the studies they support and to prevent other potential conflicts of interest. The advisory committee found that the FNIH acted appropriately with regard to the MACH study, and in fact was kept “in the dark” by those at NIAAA who had been talking with industry funders for more than two years before FNIH got involved, according to its report The NIH Office of Management Assessment agreed that the FNIH “conducted its role appropriately,” the NIH said. To root out any similar shenanigans elsewhere in the agency, each institute will immediately review its existing procedures and consider “additional measures” to identify conflicts of interest between researchers and potential funders, the NIH said. It will take a few months to wind down the trial in an orderly manner.
